Shoot 2 Find – test your precision and memory

A cozy cabin, an operatic piano, a gently crackling fire. The only thing missing? Destroying pictures and furniture with basketballs, obviously.

Shoot 2 Find is a basketball practice session taking place in an abandoned underground bunker for what we can only assume is nefarious reasons.

A gently spinning fan and somber piano music play, all the while the game asks you – almost serenely, like a dying wish – to throw 5 basketballs at a picture to find a particular spot. You can’t pass down this challenge; you understand that there has never been a grander task. An epic quest handed down from the Gods of this bunker.

You will find that Dutch windmill behind those chequered boxes!

Eventually however, it becomes clear. You need to find the image within an image by bashing it repeatedly with rubber balls until it dies and the entire chequered pattern comes off.

The game gives you five attempts each level to uncover a small section of a picture hidden behind a chequered box pattern. If you fail to uncover it in five throws (or just accidentally send the balls dropping onto the floor, missing the picture entirely, like I did) you will be met with several seconds of disappointed silence, followed by a jaunty failure music that seems straight out of an arcade parlor. You almost want to put 50p into the phone to have another go.

The start of the game is somewhat confusing; for a short time, it was more a dystopian horror game, waking up trapped in a small underground bunker with 1960’s furniture. Then being asked, nay, begged, to plunge basketballs against art in an effort to find a tiny, few pixel-wide area of a painting. For the first level, more time will be spent trying to figure out if it’s a windmill you’re looking for, or if it’s a vague smudge on your screen.

Eventually, however, it becomes clear. You need to find the image within an image by bashing it repeatedly with rubber balls until it dies and the entire chequered pattern comes off. That means you’ve won.

The music that accompanies your destruction is surprisingly serious and intense. It might be expected for loud dance music to play, but this is not a fast-paced sports game. This is Shoot 2 Find. Only the classiest, operatic piano is allowed here.

The most frustrating part about the game having the picture completely uncovered, all except for one tiny pixel, that sits there, mocking you and your lack of remaining basketballs. Then the music plays; you have failed.

Although the concept is rather hollow, little more than a picture puzzle with some basketball skills thrown in, Shoot 2 Find has a surprising amount of fun hidden within it; there is strategy and method behind each level, leaving the player with a surprising craving to keep going.

Those windmills aren’t going to find themselves.
