The Lorax isn’t your typical e-book. If you’ve seen the other Dr. Seuss stories for Android, The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas and One Fish Two Fish you already have an idea of what I’m talking about.

This app turned an old paper book into a cinematic pop-up book.

Dismal music plays in the background as the story progresses, building tension in both first-time readers and those who have read this story dozens of times. Words on the screen bolden as the story is read aloud by a narrator with a light and fanciful voice. When touched, any object in the illustration will be read aloud, and words will fly around the screen. This way, not only do young children have the opportunity to learn, but they can also feel like they’re part of the story.

Seuss’ illustrations in his old storybook The Lorax are so colorful that they still pop off the page in my family’s edition, which is now yellowing with age. In your digitized version, however, your Android’s glowing screen makes the original drawings brighter than you’ve ever seen them before. As you read, a camera zooms in and out of the pages as you turn them, making the most of every illustration.

Readers — or viewers, if you will — have the choice of how they’d like to experience the story. Choose from “Read to Me,” in which a narrator tells the story, and you turn the pages; “Read It Myself,” without a narrator; and “Autoplay,” which makes the story play out like a movie.

If you quit the application in the middle of the book, the next time you log in, you can pick up where you left off, even if you choose a different reading mode.

The Lorax is a great story with an environmental, cautionary tale that’s perhaps even more relevant today than it was when Seuss first published it back in 1971.

The price of $3.99 sounds a bit steep for an app, but The Lorax is a worthwhile investment. This is an app that can be reread, and through different means, over and over again. It’s a very colorful and fun application that’s appropriate for people of all ages.
