Looking for a video database that's a bit off the beaten path? Wimp.com for your Android phone is a reliable way to discover funny or interesting videos.
Never heard of Wimp.com? These guys certainly aren't the famed Vimeo or YouTube services, but they have been around for a while. Known for being a more “family-friendly” database of user-created videos, the Wimp.com app is a mobile extension of the mother site, providing users direct access to every video that's available on its website.
Wimp.com won't have the hot, viral videos that Twitter is buzzing about, but it does have a pretty random collection that's ripe for the picking. If you're looking for something different, yet interesting, or something a little more obscure (perhaps something ironic or strange to gain you some hipster points with the Tumblr crowd), this might be a good resource.
Wimp.com is a bit of a mixed bag, though. The site isn't quite as vast as YouTube, but there are quite a few videos available. What's nice is that the app has a feed of the most recently updated videos, and even organizes its archives by month, so you're more likely to stumble upon something interesting here by accident than you would on YouTube.
If you know what you're looking for, though, there's a search button for that very purpose. If you find something that makes you laugh or a video that you'd like to watch, but don't have the time, you can hit the save button so you can have quick access later. The videos you discover can also be easily shared on Twitter or Facebook, or emailed to a friend.
Wimp.com isn't very flashy. The layout design reminded me a bit of that template you're automatically given when you create a Wordpress account. It's just light blue and white with a very basic proprietary font.
Unfortunately, Wimp.com doesn't have its own in-app video player, so it exports you to your phone's basic media player each time you click the play button. Then the video seems to take a good while to load and then buffer.
Wimp.com is a taste of something different, but it doesn't stand up strong next to similar apps.
