Which 2-5 apps would you recommend as must-haves for Android newbies?
Get Barcode Scanner first thing! It's the handiest thing to have when you're adding NEW apps, because you can scan QR codes and not have to search the market. It also comes in handy with Google Shopper, which I think is built in on most Android phones now. If not - get that while you're at it.

I would suggest xiialive online radio! It is visually appealing and very easy to use! If you like exploring radios from other countries such as Italy, france and just about any country or music style... It sure beats FM radio :P
1, Google Sky.
2, Beyond Pod.
2. Astrid/Remember the Milk
3. Skype (if on verizon)
2. Facebook/Myspace/Twitter (if its not there already)
3.The Weather Channel/Weatherbug
After that, it depends on your lifestyle. For example, after these three, my first app download was Toddler lock and Kids Paint because my son was being hyper in a restaurant!
The Weather Channel,
GeoReader (for every roadside attraction you near)
Facebook (for keeping in touch with friends & family)
Twitter (for a world pulse)
Mind Map (for notes)
& your favorite game ...

As a brand new Android device owner (I've had my phone for...4 days!), my most-used apps are:
Pandora (which can play in the background while other apps run -- LOVE this!)
Touiteur (definitely my favorite Twitter client so far)
Foursquare (I'm a check-in junkie)
Appolicious (which is super helpful for choosing new apps)
Google Voice (I've replaced my carrier's voicemail with Google Voice -- transcripts and unlimited storage are awesome!)
Plume for Twitter,
Pandora - runs in background, complete <3
twidroyd - my favorite twitter client has everything for twitter i need
tango - love me some video chat
twitter/facebook if not already on there
springpad - keep all those notes and doodads you come across
Only 5 is not enough!
Barcode scanner a must!
google skymap is cool
google shopper to get the best prices while shopping.

Barcode scanner is a must have.
Facebook of course.
Foursquare if you're into checking in places.
Word Whisk is a good time killer word game.
I didn't think about but I will probably get the Weather Channel.
We made a game called Pot Smash where you smash pots on your phone. I think you might like that. It's free.
I suggest Alarm Plus Millenium but it isn't yet here :)
AirStream, if you want to share or stream media over your wifi.
If you want to access your media files on your PCs, laptops or other devices on your android phone, try out AirStream:
If you want to print from your Android phone, then StarPrint is a must. It offers free version to print some content. For image and pdf, web content, you need to buy feature packages to unlock it.
StarPrint, Just for Print!
An amazing & addictive new Word game - brings a breath of fresh air, being speed based and available in English & German - Word's Up!
