Get Barcode Scanner first thing! It's the handiest thing to have when you're adding NEW apps, because you can scan QR codes and not have to search the market. It also comes in handy with Google Shopper, which I think is built in on most Android phones now. If not - get that while you're at it.
Associated Apps: Barcode Scanner, Shopper Grocery Shopping List
I would suggest xiialive online radio! It is visually appealing and very easy to use! If you like exploring radios from other countries such as Italy, france and just about any country or music style... It sure beats FM radio :P

2. Facebook/Myspace/Twitter (if its not there already)
3.The Weather Channel/Weatherbug
After that, it depends on your lifestyle. For example, after these three, my first app download was Toddler lock and Kids Paint because my son was being hyper in a restaurant!

As a brand new Android device owner (I've had my phone for...4 days!), my most-used apps are:
Pandora (which can play in the background while other apps run -- LOVE this!)
Touiteur (definitely my favorite Twitter client so far)

Appolicious (which is super helpful for choosing new apps)
Google Voice (I've replaced my carrier's voicemail with Google Voice -- transcripts and unlimited storage are awesome!)
Associated Apps: Google Voice, Foursquare, Plume for Twitter, Pandora, Appolicious
