Paper Camera for Android is a sharp addition to your photo app collection

by Caitlin M. Foyt

Sure, we've all heard of apps that put interesting filters on your photos. But, I've never seen effects like the ones that come out of Paper Camera for Android.

Paper Camera applies tons of different “cartoon-like” effects to your photos in real time, making you and your friends look like sketches, paintings or comic book characters. There are 11 different filters to choose from: Comic Boom, Sketch Up, Acquarello, Old Printer, Neon Cola, Con Tours, Bleaching, Gotham Noir, Half Ton, Granny’s Paper and Pastel Perfect.

When I originally tried this app, the one key bummer about Paper Camera was that you couldn't apply any of the app's very cool effects to photos already in your phone's gallery. This has, however, been addressed by a recent update.

The app can take a while to fire up though, and the user has to wait a few moments before he or she can start snapping photos. If you're trying to preserve a fleeting moment or you're snapping a large group shot, it can be frustrating waiting for Paper Camera to get ready. Otherwise, the app works fantastically and looks great, too.

Staying true to the whole visual-art motif, Paper Camera's interface is operated by icons that look like they were drawn onto the app's menu with crayons. This gives the app a very neat effect and also does a good job of ensuring that everything on the menu is easy to see and find. I had no trouble finding my way around this one.
