Did the summer end too abruptly for you? Me too. No worries, the weekend is here. Unwind with some big screen football (NFL ’11 for Android Tablets), thwart phone snoops (Hidden Lock), and put aside the Sunday paper in favor of crosswords on your Android (NYTimes Crosswords).

NLF ‘11 for Android Tablets (Free)

The football season officially started yesterday, so this app scores for timeliness.

Get into this season in a big way, meaning on the large screen of an Android tablet, just the size screen for which this app was designed. Zoom into the virtual field with details of the game laid out in cool graphics. Read the play-by-play for each down. Or, tab through to another game, in fact, you can browse every game in the NFL through it.

Hidden Lock Lite (Free)

Don’t want anyone to know how to unlock your Android? Try this new security app.

Launch the app, then place the security icon anywhere you’d like on your phone’s screen. When you next put the device to sleep, the normal wakeup procedure will be inactive and you can use the “hidden lock” instead.

The app offers various settings including the ability to set a PIN code. If you forget where you placed the hidden lock, you can use press a sequence of hard keys on your phone to bypass it.

NYTimes Crosswords (Free, requires subscription)

What entity produces the most challenging crossword puzzles on Earth? Many would say the New York Times.

This official NYT mobile crossword app delivers more than 4,000 archived puzzles, plus you can play the new crossword from each day’s paper. Compare your solve times against your friends directly through the app, or compete for position on a global leaderboard.

The app lets you solve the puzzles by entering words into the traditional crossword grid or by typing the answers in next to the clues.
