Fresh Android Apps for Sep. 1: SportCaster, The Serval Mesh, Tiny Robots

by Ian Black

Get ready for this month’s college and pro football games by downloading SportCaster, an innovative way to keep up-to-date on sports.

In case the next hurricane takes out the Internet and your carrier, check out The Serval Mesh, and for fun, try Tiny Robots.

SportCaster (Sports, Twitter) (Free)

Where can you find the fastest update on your favorite sports team or game score? Twitter. And, that’s a key source for this app.

SportCaster combines live scores, statistics, and feeds from Twitter to deliver all you need to know, in real time, about your sports obsessions. The tweets are curated and come from players themselves as well as sports journalists and bloggers.

At launch, SportCaster covers pro and college football but other sports are on tap.

The Serval Mesh (Free)

Get off the grid and onto the mesh. This experimental open source app sounds pretty amazing. It’s targeted for use in disaster areas where the communications infrastructure has completely failed. It supports peer-to-peer cell phone calls over a mesh of phones without any Internet access or standard cellular network.

Be warned: this early release is meant to kick off the open source project and empower developers to improve the technology.

Tiny Robots (Free)

These robots may be tiny but that doesn’t mean they don’t draw big praise.

Aliens have invaded earth, though all they really want is the seed of life. In order to protect the seed, you’ll need to customize your weapon and get busy shooting down the invaders.

There’s some 1980’s arcade nostalgia going on under the stylish graphics, but you don’t need to think about much of anything. Just fire!
