Fresh Android Apps for Aug. 22: Skitch, Apparatus (update), Cowboys & Aliens

by Ian Black

Annotate your vacation photos with Skitch. Then, while away the last days of your summer break with the puzzler Apparatus or the movie tie-in Cowboys & Aliens.

Skitch (Free)

Feel the need to draw? Skitch is a company recently acquired by Evernote, and Evernote has just released the app into the Android Market.

Skitch lets you annotate photos or create diagrams and maps and quickly save them to Evernote storage or post the image to Facebook and Twitter. Add shapes, text, or draw freehand with your finger. Use the palate to change the color of your artwork.

The app’s description suggests a good use case: Meet someone new, snap his or her picture, and jot a name down on the photo with Skitch.

Apparatus update ($2.65)

This exciting puzzle game has moved out of beta status, added new elements, and fixed some bugs.

Build challenging Rube Goldberg machines to move the ball to the blue box. The machine might involve ramps, drops, motors, and elastic bands, or even rockets.

This release adds a new level, new help information, and fixes bugs mentioned by beta users. The realistic physics and the sense of accomplishment will keep you coming back. Check the rave reviews if you need more evidence.

Cowboys & Aliens ($2.99)

First a comic book, then a Hollywood movie, and now an Android game.

Join the human resistance of the Old West to save the earth from the alien invasion. Here you’ll battle the four-armed enemy in the wide-open plains, on train tracks, and on-board the alien mothership itself. Use various modes of transportation including horses, bulls, and alien motorcycles.

Switch between weapons like a lasso, shotgun, and the ever-useful space rifle in this side-scrolling platformer.
