Fresh Android Apps for July 22: VMware, Green Farm, Tour de France 2011

by Ian Black

In today’s fresh Android apps, you can get a window into your Windows PC (VWware View for Android), become a virtual farmer (Green Farm), or role play your way into the most famous cycling race in the world (Tour de France 2011).

VMware View for Android (Free)

Apple can’t have all the remote desktop fun. Combine this app with VMware View 4.6 and you can access your Windows desktop from your Android tablet. The app supports touch gestures but also lets you place a virtual floating transparent trackpad up on your tablet’s screen to move and click around your desktop as you would normally. Tap three fingers on the screen to display a QWERTY keyboard for typing. The app even supports interaction with your MS Office application like Outlook.

Green Farm (Free)

Perhaps if you were previously living deep under the earth or never heard of Facebook, you might think this game was a new idea. You own a farm and it’s up to your smart choices whether your crops flourish into a green-with-envy going enterprise or the land goes fallow from your lack of constant ADHD attention spurts. Sound familiar? Unfortunately, this app can’t connect to your online Green Farm up at GAMELOFT’s web hub, but it does let you create a nice companion farm on your device. Look, I made it through this write up without mentioning Farmville, once!

Tour de France 2011 – Official ($3.40)

The Tour de France runs through this Sunday. You could watch it on TV, but you may want to get in on the action yourself by playing this official game. With a focus on realism, this game lets you control individual cyclists or an entire racing team. You’ll find actual profiles of real riders and the real jerseys given to riders – polka dot for best climber, green for best sprinter, and the famous yellow jersey for the leader and winner.
