Limit airport unpleasantness with the GateGuru Android app

by Caitlin M. Foyt

If uncomfortable naps, over-priced snacks and boring magazines come to mind when you think of airport entertainment, you might not be getting the most out of your traveling experience.

The GateGuru app for your Android phone aims to give users a better understanding of everything that's available at the airport you're spending time at. That way you can locate the best food, shopping and service options. For instance, the app lets you know what meal options are available in pre-security areas or places you won't be able to easily get to when you're waiting to board your plane.

Obviously, this app isn't promising you an exciting culinary adventure, and clearly the airport isn't any kind of shopping mall, but it does let you know what's nearby so you can make well-informed decisions about how to spend your time and money during your layover. What's especially handy is the fact that the app lists tons of reviews from other travelers, so you can see what you're in for.

While you're wandering around, trying to stay occupied, you obviously want to stay in the loop with your flight details and travel plans. The app has the option for you to check on the status of your flight and to view your TripIt or KAYAK itineraries. KAYAK seems to sync up with the app without issue, but several users complained that GateGuru has difficulty loading up TripIt travel info, and often even causes the app to crash.

What I like most about GateGuru is how easy it is to use, and how clear the maps are. This is a very professional-looking, well-designed application. I don't think the average user will have issues with this one, and it will even come as a breath of fresh air to many.
