Android games on your PC, courtesy of BlueStacks

Android games have made for great mobile entertainment, but don’t let the small screen limit your fun. A startup called BlueStacks is launching a virtualization tool that will run your Android apps, including games, on your Windows PC. The idea came to BlueStacks co-founder Suman Saraf when his young daughter wanted to continue playing Android games on the family computer. With a virtualization product already in the works, it was his daughter’s penchant for Android games that gave Saraf the idea.

To be unveiled at the Citrix Synergy conference today, BlueStacks provides PC software that will run Android apps on their computers. The startup’s landed a couple of early partners, as well as $7.6 million in Series A funding. BlueStacks is looking to replicate some iOS capabilities, especially now that the Mac App Store is available for Apple computers. It’s largely an appeal to Android users seeking an iPad experience, as co-founder Rosen Sharma tells AllThingsD that “All of them are suffering because the iPad came out.”

Startups and innovation for Android games

Other startups eagerly seeking funding can look to TinyCo, a mobile game developer that’s launched a $5 million gaming fund called the TinyFund. With five top grossing iOS games including Tiny Chef and Tap Resort, TinyCo’s reportedly exceeded 20 million game downloads. The game developer recently closed an $18 million funding round led by Andreesen Horowitz, an investor that’s also participated in BlueStacks’ Series A round. Offering marketing and business support is an important aspect of developer growth for the Android market in particular, as the platform could always use some innovation to compete with Apple.

One company that’s leveraging Android tablets for innovative games and marketing is Friskies, the cat food maker. They’ve launched an interactive game for your cat, and if you already get a kick out of watching your kitty play, then you’ll be equally entertained watching your pet swipe away at your tablet. With three games in its Games for Cats catalog, your cat can hunt for fish or catch a flood of treats, all developed to appeal to your cats’ behavioral senses. Did you ever think you’d see the day?
