Next Issue Media pushes magazines to Android

There are many magazines available through iTunes to be viewed on your iPad, but Apple (AAPL) does not have the exclusive on these magazines. It looks like the magazine publishers are looking to sell through Google’s Android devices as well. Starting today Samsung (005930.KS) Galaxy users will be able to download app versions of seven magazines via a digital newsstand put together by Next Issue Media, the “Hulu” for magazines consortium.

The Android tablet users have some good stuff to look forward to. Among the titles on the Android Market today will be Esquire, Popular Mechanics, Fitness, Parents, Fortune, and Time magazines. In addition, they will be giving existing subscribers access to digital versions of their magazines on their tablet devices. CEO Morgan Guenther says that the consortium hopes to be selling 40 titles by the fall and also have a version of the app out for HP’s (HPQ) webOS.

Despite the fact that there is certainly some excitement on this front, the publishers are late in the move to digitizing magazines in the Android Market. Apple has been doing this for over a year now. In addition, their overall distribution area within the Android tablet market is low. Despite the fact that Apple hasn’t moved a great deal on the digitized magazine front since its release last year with iPad, this will still be viewed as a ‘late’ move.
