Amazon’s new Android Appstore may be promoting games like Angry Birds Rio in order to attract new users, but the third party market is also a marketing opportunity for app developers. Glu Mobile, for instance, is launching several game titles in the Amazon Appstore, including Diner Dash and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Beyond gaming, Amazon’s (AMZN) featuring productivity apps in its Android app store too. Springpad is one of the launch partners, benefiting from the premium placement in the new app storefront. The timing was perfect for Springpad, aligning with their Android app update. Springpad 2.1 was designed specifically for Android’s platform, incorporating custom home screen widgets into the design.
The update also takes advantage of Android’s metadata capabilities, enabling cross-browser bookmarks to pick up on important parts of a mobile web page in order to auto-organize its content in your Springpad account. The differences between Google’s (GOOG) Android and iOS are already quite distinct for Springpad, with Android receiving twice as many downloads than its Apple (AAPL) counterpart. “The discovery on Android is better,” notes Springpad CEO Jeff Janer. “The way the Android marketplace has evolved...the cream does rise to the top.”
Android’s continued growth, especially in its app economy, means Amazon is likely to launch its own specialized Android device, or at least consider its potential beyond the Kindle reader. Android tablets continue their creep into the consumer market, as HTC (2498.TW) announces two new devices in its upcoming Flyer line-up. Not many details have been revealed yet, but the new handsets will feature the tablet-ready Honeycomb 3.0, in lieu of the Flyer’s initial support of Android 2.4. Samsung (005930.KS) is also upping its Honeycomb 3.0 support with its next Galaxy Tab, which will reportedly be able to connect to LTE networks in Nordic regions.
