Fresh Android Apps for Mar. 2: XFINITY TV, Cabela’s Recon Hunt, Marionette Theater

by Ian Black

Today’s fresh apps let you plan your night in front of the tube (XFINITY TV), plan your next big game safari (Cabela’s Recon Hunt) or put on a puppet show (Marionette Theater).

XFINITY TV (Free)

Comcast continues to branch out to mobile devices. First the company released an iPad app, and now they’ve arrived on Android phones.

Use this XFINITY TV app as your mobile smart TV guide. Browse the current schedule, specific to your account, and search for content you like. Set filters based on genre, whether the content is free or not, HD or non-HD. Then, best of all, set your DVR to record your finds right from the phone. You can also peruse On Demand content.

Cabela’s Recon Hunt ($3.99)

What’s the next big thing for hunting expeditions? Maybe an Android smartphone.

Use this app to organize and document your next hunting trip. Use GPS markers to tag the location of your car, the deer camp, and other important landmarks. Snap and save trophy photos. Get up-to-date weather info, phases of the moon, even ballistics information.

The creators say the app was specifically designed to minimize battery consumption so it won’t drain your phone dry while you’re out in the wilderness.

Marionette Theater (¥100)

Let’s put on a show! Puppet theater is as old as show business and now it's gone digital.

Marionette Theater makes you the puppet master. Select the characters for your performance from the set of twelve puppets. Then, touch the sticks to make them move. Scroll the backgrounds by tipping the phone left or right. Make the puppets jump with a tap.

Create your own show to entertain the kids, or hand them your phone and let their imaginations run wild.
