Fresh Android Apps for Feb. 10: Garmin Tracker, Dropcam, Fast Favorites Widget

by Ian Black

The original 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (don’t speak to me about the remakes) is a masterpiece of paranoia. But that was fiction. Fresh new Android apps let you track (Garmin Tracker) and monitor (DropCam) stuff like no previous generation could.

Want more? Fast Favorites Widget enhances your home screen with speed dialing.

Garmin Tracker (Free)

Location services continue to enable hovering parents everywhere. Garmin’s new Android app lets you watch anything you tag with a GPS – your kids, a pet, your car, a camera bag, etc. You can watch the route on a map, set up a geo-fence with SMS and email alerts, navigate between your tagged item and your current location, view history, and much more.

The app is free, but a compatible Garmin tag will set you back $199.

Dropcam (Free)

Maybe knowing the location of things isn’t enough. Wouldn’t it be nice to see real live video of the things you care about? Dropcam will get it done. Place one of’s Wi-Fi-capable cameras in your house or business, then watch the feed anytime, anywhere using this app.

Ready for some Déjà vu? The app is free, but a compatible Dropcam camera will set you back – wait for it – $199.

Fast Favorites Widget ($1.99)

Name a feature that Android phones desperately need? Speed dialing contacts is high on the list. This simple widget delivers you personalized contacts right to the home screen of your Droid.

The widget allows you to set up one place for access to all your favorite contacts, or you can set individual widgets for individual contacts. With the latter, you have one-touch call, email or text buttons right next to the photo.
