Android app Goby helps you find fun things to do, no matter where you are

by Caitlin M. Foyt

If you're bored, there are a ton of different websites to help find fun things to do locally. But it can sometimes be a lot to sift through. Goby is an app for your Android device that allows you to simplify your searches by listing all of these activities and places in a single spot.

Goby is a location-based search engine that gives users different ideas of fun things to do in their spare time. From the app's main screen, there are three different clickable tabs designed to better direct you to happenings that relate to your interests based on your location and schedule: "Find Cool Stuff Near Me Today," "Make Weekend Plans" and "Explore New Locations."

By prompting you with many different genres of fun, you can find exactly the kind of activity you're looking for. You can, for instance, be looking to get outside and play (Outdoor Recreation), go to a museum (Arts & Culture) or plan a night out (Entertainment & Nightlife), to name a few. There are tons of categories, both general and specific. According to Goby's website, the search engine currently has more then 4 million geo-tagged locations.

What's also cool about this app is that it isn't limited to just finding an activity. You can also use Goby to plan a whole expedition around a particular happening, whether it's a day trip or a weeklong vacation.

The app includes helpful descriptions and photos, an address with the option to see it on a map and the ability to search for what else is nearby. There's even an option to call the place of business from within the app, just by clicking the "Call" button. There is an occasional “Ratings” tab that pops up under the Food & Drink and Places to Stay categories, but it's not standard. This, I think, is where the app is lacking.

This app doesn't require you to make an account, which I was pretty excited about. (Making accounts over and over again can get a little irritating.) It also makes sharing upcoming events with friends on Facebook and Twitter really easy. I can see myself using this app as a quick and informal way to organizing get-togethers.

This app is also going to become a good friend of mine during road trips. This is exactly the kind of program I've been looking for — a quick and easy way to find out more about local under-the-radar happenings.
