Seesmic Android app measures earthshaking tweets

Twitter fans unite! Yes, you have options. Twitter clients abound, but Seesmic is worth checking out.

View your Twitter feed in a condensed timeline that is easy to flick through. Touch and hold any entry you like, and Seesmic presents you with the following options: "View Tweet," "Reply," "Retweet," "Direct Message," "Favorite" and "Share." Similarly, you can tab to view all your replies, all your direct messages and your Twitter profile.

Composing a new tweet is a breeze. In seconds, you can create a message, add either a new photo or one from your gallery, add a video and even a location tag or link. It's a great adaptation of Twitter to a touch-screen mobile.

Need more? Check out the dynamically updated list of topics on Twitter, and then drill down into the tweets. Or, access your Twitter lists — Twitter's group feature — to follow the activities of your friends, family or colleagues. A powerful search feature lets you scan all tweets, users or just the trending topics.

Seesmic aims to be a social networking clearinghouse, but at this point, the app only supports Twitter and Google Buzz accounts. You can add multiple accounts of either type, but you won't find any Facebook access.

All in all, Seesmic shows again that it's possible to create a phone app that's easier to use, in some ways, than the original web service or site. It's free, so there's nothing to lose by giving it a try.
