"Location, location, location," goes the old saying, though the quote usually refers to the real estate business. With mobile phones, we can now track and share an individual's whereabouts, even on the move. Glympse solves an age-old problem of alerting other people to where you are, whether they're family, friends or colleagues. It's a cool app that accomplishes what it sets out to do.
Download the free app from the Android market, and register by creating a new account. From there, it's a simple matter of sending Glympses of your location. You can send via email, SMS or Facebook, and specify how long the recipients will be able to track your movements. The real advantage Glympse provides over other location-sharing services is that the people you share with don't need to be part of the service or any social network.
The user stories shown on the Glympse web site feel compelling. Telling your co-workers you'll be late – by showing them your real-time location. Allowing your family to track your commute home. Not worrying about changing venues for a gathering of friends because Glympse shows if you move elsewhere.
Glympse thought through the design of the app. It's easy to add contacts, and fast to send new Glympses out. The UI lets you tap on the map to receive a list of Glympses you've dropped. And, adding a nickname lets you keep your identity private, if you want. You can also add a picture, and enter in your social network credentials for Twitter or Facebook for easy sharing.
Check it out, and, as the Glympse slogan states, "Share your Where."
