PapayaMobile’s new one-stop-shop for Android game developers

by Kristen Nicole

Platform upgrades

PapayaMobile is at it again, with the launch of a new game engine for developers. It offers a free, Open GL run-time script with a straightforward setup for developing games, making it a one-stop destination for publishing, marketing and monetizing smartphone games. This is the latest in a string of releases from PapayaMobile, which has been an early supporter of Android’s mobile platform.

The biggest point of differentiation for PapayaMobile’s new developer tools is that it’s written in C on Android, instead of Java. This enables game publishers to avoid the complexities of the Android API, still delivering social games using Python or Flash for a quality gaming experience. PapayaMobile tells me they worked closely with Google (GOOG) on this project, ensuring compatibility and usability for developers’ purposes.

This is on top of PapayaMobile’s existing Android tools, which bring an entire network of social, casual games to the Android Market. Papaya has already made a significant update to its platform by opening it up to developers earlier this year, providing them the tools to cross-promote and generate revenue from their games.

Platform perks

“The Papaya Game Engine is intended to help developers gain maximum return on investment for their game titles,” says Si Shen, co-founder and CEO, PapayaMobile. “We know the pain developers experience as they create mobile games from the ground up or port them from other platforms. Our game engine significantly reduces the time and resource investment to do this while also exposing a developer’s game to the most diverse monetization channels possible.”

A major benefit for end users is the seamless navigation from one PapayaMobile game to another, without having to leave their current game app. The update still includes all the platform’s other perks, including social gaming, leaderboards, avatars and a centralized virtual goods market.

PapayaMobile’s latest move is validation of Android as a mobile gaming destination, with enhanced support for addressing developer needs. Among other game platforms like OpenFeint, there’s a rapidly expanding opportunity for game publishers to more easily distribute their titles.
