New Android apps worth downloading: A Beautiful Mess, Ridiculous Fishing, Badland

by Phil Hornshaw

Turn your holiday photos into something a little more interesting than the standard filtered vintage image with A Beautiful Mess. The app is today’s first on our list of Apps Worth Downloading, followed by a couple of great games to get you through the week. First is Ridiculous Fishing, an arcade title in which players snag fish from the water and shoot them out of the air, followed by Badland, a side-scrolling adventure title in which players need to use clones to avoid obstacles.

A Beautiful Mess ($0.99)

A Beautiful MessWhat’s it about? Photography app A Beautiful Mess lets users make creations out of their images with custom filters, fonts and more.

What’s cool? A Beautiful Mess lets you do a little more with the photos you take with your Android devices. Once you take your shots, you can add lots of cool elements to the finished product, like filters to change how the image looks, text in various fonts, and hand-drawn items like doodles. A Beautiful Mess can also make collages of your photos quickly and easily, making for something a little more unique than just a vintage-looking digital photo. Once you’re finished, the app allows you to upload your images to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Who’s it for? Anyone who would like to do more with their photos and just add filters should see what A Beautiful Mess has to offer.

What’s it like? You can get more cool photo editing capabilities with Camera ZOOM FX and Pic Say Pro.

Ridiculous Fishing ($2.99)

Ridiculous FishingWhat’s it about? A casual title that uses tilt- and tap-based gameplay, Ridiculous Fishing combines fishing for pixelated deep sea animals with blasting them with a shotgun (or other guns).

What’s cool? The “ridiculous” part of Ridiculous Fishing is what happens after you send your lure down as far as it can go to pull various fish and sea creatures from the depths – you then do a little hunting as you chuck them into the air, where you’ll need to blast them with various firearms to earn money and buy new equipment. Ridiculous Fishing is a rather hilarious arcade title in which your first goal is to send your lure as far as it can go, dodging fish with tilt controls along the way, and then snagging as many of those fish as possible as the lure comes back up to the boat. Every fish you catch is logged by the game, so you’ll have plenty to do as you adventure between different fishing spots, and the more fish you catch, the more money you’ll earn for cool upgrades, like deeper-diving lures and more powerful, insane guns.

Who’s it for? If you like goofy arcade titles that make solid use of different elements of mobile gameplay, try Ridiculous Fishing.

Badland (Free)

BadlandWhat’s it about? Side-scroller Badland tasks players with avoiding obstacles as a small winged creature that has the uncanny ability to clone itself and change size and shape.

What’s cool? There’s no getting through most of the obstacles you’ll find in side-scrolling action title Badland alive – unless you have a few copies of yourself who can take the brunt of the damage, that is. That’s why Badland is packed full of power-ups that can give you an edge over things like saw blades, spikes, gears and other objects you’ll have to dodge. In some of the game’s levels, you’ll find yourself turned huge; in others, you’ll be rendered small; in still others, you’ll be made bouncy or sticky. Finding clone power-ups is key to progressing, and you’re scored in each level for your efficiency and for how many clones you manage to save from disaster.

Who’s it for? Fans of runner-style games, side-scrollers and great graphics will want to check out Badland.
