New Android apps worth downloading: Digg, Shazam update, Skylanders Cloud Patrol

We're starting this shortened week of Apps Worth Downloading with the newly released Digg app. Like its Internet counterpart, Digg brings great articles and other content to readers through a combination of popularity and curation. We've also got an update to music recognition app Shazam that brings a new tablet interface, and Skylanders Cloud Patrol, a shooter based on the super-popular toy-video game hybrids from Activision.

Digg (Free)

DiggWhat’s it about? Find great content from around the Internet based on what's popular and the judgment of curators on Digg.

What’s cool? Much like the web-based service by the same name, the Android version of Digg is all about finding, reading and sharing great content. The app provides tons of great articles from around the web, found and curated by Digg editors and informed by what's popular with other users. You can use the app to check out RSS feeds or follow your favorite online publications, and Digg also makes it easy to recommend things you enjoyed reading to other users. The app supports lots of social networks for sharing, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus, and also can integrate with apps such as Pocket and Instapaper, so you can save interesting articles for later.

Shazam update (Free)

ShazamWhat’s it about? Shazam is a handy music discovery app that can identify the music you playing around you using your Android device's microphone and Internet connection.

What’s cool? Among the most popular early smartphone apps was Shazam, made famous in iPhone commercials. There's a reason so many people like it – Shazam's ability to “listen” to songs and identify them over an Internet connection can be really useful, especially when you can't remember the name of a song or you want to buy a great track you hear playing in a store. You can sync the app with Rdio and Spotify to listen to music through Shazam instantly, see what your friends have found using Shazam, and stream lyrics to songs you're listening to, as well. The app's new update adds tablet support and a new user interface for bigger devices.

Who’s it for? Shazam is great for music lovers or casual enthusiasts who can use its great music-identifying capabilities.

What’s it like? You can get some similar functionality out of SoundHound and TrackID.

Skylanders Cloud Patrol ($1.99)

Skylanders Cloud PatrolWhat’s it about? Skylanders Sky Patrol sees players manning the guns of an airship filled with characters from the Skylanders games, and tasked with blasting escaped trolls from various floating islands.

What’s cool? Trolls are loose in the Skylands and it's your job to take them out in Skylanders Cloud Patrol. As the gunner of an airship alongside other Skylanders characters, you'll use tap controls to blast the escaping trolls and swipe to create combos. The more combos you can create by connecting shots, the higher the score you'll earn. Each level has a goal you're trying to meet in order to advance, and you can utilize magic items to amplify your power and take down more trolls, as well, which can help you climb up Skylanders' online leaderboards as you compete with other players.

Who’s it for? Fans of the Skylanders games and casual players should find Skylanders Cloud Patrol easy to pick up and enjoy.

What’s it like? Monster Shooter 2 can also provide players with some cartoon shooter action.
