by Phil Hornshaw

Worried about keeping your data safe on your Android smartphone? You might check out today’s leading fresh app, Trend Micro's Mobile Security & Antivirus, which can help shut down data-stealing and privacy-breaking apps on your device. We’ve also got Adobe Photoshop Touch for phones, which is exactly what it sounds like, and Real Racing 3, a free-to-play entry into the graphically gorgeous racing game series.

Mobile Security & Antivirus update (Free)

Trend MicroWhat’s it about? Security software developer Trend Micro provides security protection for your smartphone, like antivirus software, data backup and more.

What’s cool? Viruses and other malware are a huge problem on Android, so providing users with a means of protecting their devices can be extremely helpful to a lot of people. Trend Micro’s security suite requires a subscription for a lot of its services, but includes things like the ability to find your device if you lose it or its stolen, safe filtering for kids that keeps questionable content out of text messages and web browsing, and a data theft scanner that vets your apps for possible wrongdoing. Trend Micro’s latest update to the app increases performance for a lot of features and adds new data backup capabilities. It also adds the ability to keep track of how Facebook might compromise your privacy through its interactions with your apps.

Who’s it for? Users who feel they could use a little additional security should give Trend Micro’s app a look.

Adobe Photoshop Touch for phone ($4.99)

Adobe Photoshop Touch for phonesWhat’s it about? It’s Adobe Photoshop – for your phone. Making the leap from tablets, Adobe provides its famous photo-editing technology, scaled down and simplified for touchscreens.

What’s cool? It’s kind of hard to articulate what makes Adobe Photoshop Touch cool beyond “Photoshop for your phone.” The Photoshop Touch interface makes it possible to create a number of really great, interesting effects for users who spend some time to learn the program, but even if you’re picking it up for the first time, it’s possible to do a lot to your images. The app makes it possible to quickly combine images and scale and crop them, and you can snap pictures from your camera to instantly fill layers on a project. The app also includes a lot of features from the classic Photoshop software for computers, which means you get a lot of power all in your smartphone.

Who’s it for? If the ability to robustly edit images on your phone appeals to you, Photoshop Touch is something you should check out.

What’s it like? You might also try Adobe’s Photoshop Express, and other image editing apps such as Photo Image Editor.

Real Racing 3 (Free)

Real Racing 3What’s it about? The latest in update to one of the biggest racing series in the iTunes App Store, players are once again treated to some phenomenal graphics and a huge number of races to play through.

What’s cool? The Real Racing series is known for being pretty spectacular. It packs some of the best graphics on the mobile platform, and the latest entry into the series features both real cars and real tracks for players to experience. You can also take on other players in multiplayer matches, and Real Racing 3’s “time-shifted multiplayer” means you don’t even have to be playing at the same time in order to compete. The game features more than 900 events to take part in, but be aware that unlike previous entries into the franchise, this one is free-to-play. It includes a huge amount of content for free, but expect to be bugged to pay to unlock many of the title’s features.

Who’s it for? Racing fans and players who previously enjoyed the earlier Real Racing titles, this one’s a no-brainer.

What’s it like? Check out Real Racing 2 for more in the franchise, and Gameloft’s competitor in Asphalt 7.
