New Android apps worth downloading: Foursquare for Business, Yelp update, Cubes vs. Spheres

by Phil Hornshaw

Foursquare for Business, today’s first app worth downloading, helps business owners create deals and spread the word about their stores. An update to Yelp brings an upgraded Google Maps to the social rating app. Last is Cubes vs. Spheres, a turret defense game about destroying evil geometric shapes.

Foursquare for Business (Free)

What’s it about? Merchants can get the most out of Foursquare for Business, as it’s meant for them to update photos and information about their establishment, set up offers for customers, and view analytics data.

What’s cool? You’ve probably heard about the consumer side of Foursquare, the social network that’s all about “checking in” to different businesses and rewarding repeat customers with deals. Foursquare for Business is the other side, allowing business owners to put their best foot forward by adding images of their businesses on the social network and posting deals of which users can take advantage. You can also view information about check-ins through social network and see how well your deals are performing.

Who’s it for? Business owners who want to try Foursquare as a means of drawing customers, this one’s for you.

What’s it like? There’s also the standard Foursquare for finding businesses around you, taking advantage of check-in deals, and discover your friends’ hang out spots.

Yelp update (Free)

What’s it about? Business rating app Yelp helps you find the right place for the job, allowing users to read reviews from other patrons and to post their own reviews and ratings about different establishments.

What’s cool? Yelp mingles the GPS capabilities of your Android smartphone to help you find what you need, from restaurants to hardware stores, guided by user ratings. It’s a social network, which means you can also comment on establishments and review others to share both positive and negative experiences. Yelp’s latest update adds Google Maps v.2, which means vector-based maps, 3-D map capabilities, and better performance for finding businesses near you.

Who’s it for? Yelp is for travelers and anyone who wants a second or third opinion before spending money at a business.

What’s it like? YP Local Search can also give you lots of information about nearby businesses, and Alfred is great for finding restaurants.

Cubes vs. Spheres (Free)

What’s it about? A turret defense title, Cubes vs. Spheres has players shooting spheres to ward off approaching, evil cubes.

What’s cool? It sounds kind of simple, but Cubes vs. Spheres can get pretty intense. The game has players fighting off wave after wave of cubes, which inexorably roll themselves toward you, by firing different spheres at them. Accuracy is key to keeping yourself from getting overwhelmed, but there are a number of different kinds of spheres that will factor into your strategy. Using the right kind of ammunition for the job allows you to do things like freeze cubes, explode them or even confuse them.

Who’s it for? Fans of action games and the turret defense genre will find good, tense times with Cubes vs. Spheres.

What’s it like? Try Turret Commander and Titan Turret for more stationary defensive action.
