Fresh Android Apps for July 25: Viber update, SoFit, Shark Dash Free

by Marty Gabel

An update to Viber leads our Fresh Apps selection today. This popular service offers free calls and messages and now offers group messaging and a few other enhancements. We’ve also got the lowdown on SoFit, an app that aims to motivate your fitness quest with rewards and charitable donations. Finally, there’s Shark Dash Free, a free-to-play version of the popular physics/puzzler game, also with a charitable quest in mind.

Viber update (Free)

This popular VoIP Android app, which offers free calls and messages, received a large update yesterday to further improve its functionality. Alongside a smart new UI, the main feature added in version 2.2 is group messaging, enabling users to send messages to groups of friends with ease.

Also, users can add custom backgrounds and photos to their contacts, there are now timestamps for all conversations and international localization was added for Chinese, Portuguese, German, Spanish, French and Russian languages. Expect an additional update for Jelly Bean compatibility soon.

SoFit (Free)

SoFit continues the ever-growing trend of apps that offer you rewards and benefits for working out and staying fit. Still, if these kinds of schemes keep people motivated to remain healthy, that’s no bad thing, and SoFit is a partner of the U.S. State Department’s “Walk A Mile” charity campaign, too.

Whether you like to workout hard in the gym every night, or simply stroll to work each day, SoFit tracks your activity and lets you ‘virtually’ compete against friends. As you exercise, you earn points which lead to exclusive product offers, music and video downloads, and of course, contributions to charity fundraising campaigns.

Shark Dash Free (Free)

Gameloft, in collaboration with nature charity WildAid, have introduced this free version of the physics puzzler in preparation for Discovery Channel’s impending Shark Week. They’re aiming to showcase the plight of wild sharks which are often hunted for their fins and need your help to avoid extinction.

If you never got to play the $0.99 original Shark Dash, why not try this one instead? You’ll discover 96 levels of shark-flinging physics/puzzle action featuring an adorable band of bath toys including Sharkee, Sawy, Hammy and Scuby. Grab enough coins, and you’ll be able to upgrade your aquatic friends’ looks with cool new skins.
