Fresh Android Apps for July 11: GitHub, Twitter update, BTN2Go

by Marty Gabel

Today’s leading fresh app is GitHub, a perfect accompaniment for programmers and coders who use the web-based service. We’ve also got an update to Twitter which adds content previews and better notifications. Finally, for the collegiate sports fans out there, we’ve got BTN2Go to keep you up-to-date with all the action from the Big Ten Network.

GitHub (Free)

GitHub has found itself in the news recently after a $100M investment from Andreessen Horowitz. Somewhat lost in all that hubbub was the release of the company’s official Android app, but it’s here and it will be a welcome addition to the GitHub suite of services.

GitHub is an online community for software programmers. The app allows coders to continue tracking their discussions on their Android smartphones or tablets. It lets users stay up-to-date with an integrated news feed for all their organizations, friends and repositories, as well as discovering, sharing and discussing code snippets.

Twitter update (Free)

Alongside a revamped iOS update, Twitter also released a substantial update to its Android app yesterday, too. Version 3.3.0 adds quite a lot more than just a subtle change to its icon.

When you view tweet details containing links to partner sites, you can now see content previews, view images, play videos and more, although this feature is rolling out gradually. In addition, you can choose to receive push notifications from people you follow anytime they tweet or retweet. There are improvements to search autocomplete, tappable avatars that take you directly to user profiles, and other bug fixes.

BTN2Go (Free)

The Big Ten Network (BTN) televises hundreds of Midwest collegiate sports tournaments each year including football, basketball and additional Olympic events. Now it has an official Android app, and an optimized tablet version is also available.

BTN2Go gives fans the ability to watch the network, live game telecasts and BTN television programming wherever they are, providing their cable/satellite provider supports it. There’s on-demand access to BTN's deep video archive, plus original series like The Journey and Big Ten Icons. Whether you follow the Hoosiers, or root for the Buckeyes, BTN2Go is worth a look.
