Twitter’s always known the power of its mobile user base, so a recent update to its Android and iPhone apps makes it easier to search. The update addresses the growing number of people tweeting via mobile devices, bringing the familiar website’s “Discover” tab to their mobile app. With this you’ll see which of your tweets have been favorited or retweeted, who your followers are following and who’s being added to their lists. The Twitter search function has also been improved to display suggestions for different spellings, as well as related terms for your queries.
Another familiar site feature that’s made its way to mobile is the “Connect” tab, set to auto-complete the entry as you type a user’s first and last name. Twitter also added push notifications for interactions, so you’ll see when you’ve been followed, retweeted or favorited. These levels of push notifications can be adjusted in the settings.
Amazon, Samsung rule the Android market
Twitter’s mobile upgrade reflects a growing trend shifting from the PC web to connected devices, a trend driven by the success of Android gadget makers like Amazon and Samsung. According to the latest figures from market research comScore, Amazon’s Kindle Fire has gained 54.4 percent of the U.S. Android tablet market. And while Samsung trails far behind the tablet market with just 15.4 percent, their global smartphone footprint has eclipsed Apple and Nokia in recent months.
Samsung’s become the world’s biggest mobile handset vendor for the first time ever in the first quarter of 2012, taking a quarter of the global market, according to a report released this morning by London-based research firm Strategy Analytics. In the quarter ending March 2012, the South Korean electronics giant shipped 36 percent more handsets than last year. Their success is a big win for Android, with tripled demand for its Galaxy line up. That’s good news for Samsung as it prepares to reveal its latest Galaxy device next month.
