Fresh Android Apps for Apr. 10: SparkNotes, Ice Age Village, Drag Racing: Bike Edition

by Ian Black

Students: you may not be able to bring your Android in to an exam, but you can certainly use it to prep for the test with apps like SparkNotes. Relax afterwards by playing Ice Age Village or Drag Racing: Bike Edition.

SparkNotes (Free)

Still need to do some studying before Spring Break? Get more efficient with this helpful app from the famous study guide publisher. Browse through guides on topics like literature, poetry, philosophy, drama and short stories. Use guides online or download them for use when you’re device is not connected. The app comes pre-loaded with 50 SparkNotes guides in your “library”.

Want a study buddy? You can do that too by creating a new study group right in the app. Allow the app to share your location info and post updates to Google Places or your Facebook wall. The rave reviews from students are already in, and most are of the “how did I ever live without this?” variety. Hundreds of guides are available within the app’s store.

Ice Age Village (Free)

Fans of the Ice Age movie franchise can finally rejoice. The series has just spun-off an Android App featuring Scrat, Manny, Ellie, Diego and Sid – the main characters of the pre-historic animated films. Once again, Scrat’s lust for acorns launches the plot involving a huge new crack in the Earth’s crust and a bunch of animals with nowhere to live.

Build a FarmVille-like encampment for the critters with homes, decorations, and the ability to add new species into the mix. If you thirst for adventure, take part in side missions and mini-games showcasing Scrat and his addiction to acorns. The app kicks off a marketing campaign for Ice Age: Continental Drift which bows this summer and you can view video trailers through the app.

Drag Racing: Bike Edition (Free)

Hear the heavy-metal thunder? This extension to the popular Drag Racing game brings out the motorcycles. Choose from among 17 models and then personalize the bike to your liking. When you’re ready to hit the track, customize the settings for gear shifts and turbo-charging. Race for points that you can use to upgrade your bikes, then share your best runs out over Facebook and Twitter.

Use multiplayer mode for challenging racers from around the world as you vie for highest rank on a global leaderboard, and choose your tracks from a set of far-flung world cities (which alters the background landscape). The creators say the game comes optimized for Android tablets and high-resolution phones.
