Fresh Android Apps for Jan. 16: Tricorder, Ice Breaker!, Azada

by Ian Black

Here’s to a year of imagination! Check out the Tricorder app for a blast from the sci-fi past that’s both clever and based in reality. For some destructive fun, try Ice Breaker! and to stave off dementia, download Azada.

Tricorder (Free)

Beam me up, Scotty! My tricorder says this alien land is too dangerous and strange for us space explorers.

Turn your Android into a Star Trek “tricorder” using this smart and heartfelt homage to the famous sci-fi measurement tool. The best part? The information displayed in on-screen graphs is real data streaming from your Android’s sensors. Quick, you red-shirted security officer, hand me my phaser!

Ice Breaker! (Free)

Need to start a conversation with a stranger at a party? Show them this cool app. We all know ice sculptures aren’t meant to last, but this game aims to hasten their demise with some explosives.

The dramatically beautiful sculptures – a dragonfly, cherries, a leaf and more – look too good to destroy, but don’t let that slow you down. Launch mini-bombs with your slingshot and blow as much of the art and the resulting chunks off the screen as you can to collect the most points.

Azada (Free)

Misty-eyed over the old, classic game Myst? Cheer up, a new 21st century puzzle mystery, called Azada has arrived fresh in the Android Market.

Trapped in a magical room, a mysterious character named Titus asks you to help free him by filling in the pages of an enchanted book. Doing so will require you to solve several puzzles that ratchet up in difficulty as you go. Expect beautiful graphics, thoughtful challenges and mood music to set the scene.

This free starter requires a 33MB download after launch, but to get the full game, you’ll need to buy it through an in-app purchase for about 4 bucks.
