Fresh Android Apps for Dec. 20: Tio Keyboard, NFL Pro 2012, Modern Combat 3, SummitX Snowboarding

by Ian Black

It’s time to go pro! It doesn’t matter in what sport ‘cause Android Market covers them all, whether it’s football (NFL Pro 2012), soldiering (Modern Combat 3), or snowboarding (SummitX Snowboarding).

Type all your holiday thank-you notes on a brand new keyboard (Tio Keyboard).

Tio Keyboard (Free)

What’s the shortest way from A to Z? The description of this app says it’s the Tio Keyboard. The keyboard condenses the typical 30 keys down to just 10 by merging the three main letter rows into one, which makes you move your fingers much less then you do when typing normally. The predictive text engine, called CSP (pronounced “cusp”) displays the word or alternative choices.

Will it work for you? Try the free app on your Android device to see for yourself. Tio Keyboard also sells a physical keyboard for those who fall in love with the technology.

NFL Pro 2012 (Free)

The NFL playoffs are coming and you can get in on the action with this mobile football game. Make the call like the coach and quarterback and then watch the play unfold before your eyes. Because of the NFL licensing, the game fields real players and real teams. Playbooks provide actual NFL strategy or use the Playbook Editor, you can create your own. Build points to unlock new stadiums, playbooks, and boosts to your team’s stats.

It’s free, but some of the initial comments complain about the in-app purchases needed to take full advantage of the game.

Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation ($6.99)

Like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, this smartphone game brings the war home to the US. Fight through thirteen chapters with missions from Pakistan to Los Angeles. Battle through many scenarios including street, helicopter, 4X4 chase, and more. Marvel at the special effects and voice acting, improved in this edition, which adds depth to the destruction. Join with up to 12 others for multiplayer action or go it alone and keep your eye on the leaderboards.

SummitX Snowboarding (Free)

Steep and deep, baby! Let’s hope the weather in your neck of the woods matches the snow-covered mountain ranges of this realistic snowboarding game. Carve your way through 36 multi-branching runs on six mountains. Play as the “dude” or “dudette” while you catch air and try to perform the most and biggest tricks before you reach the end of the bottom. You’ll know you’ve done something good when your rider starts to shimmer and shine.
