SplashPlay is an app for the Android platform that teaches you how to play guitar. That is, if you purchase the add-on device. The concept is fairly interesting and offers some cool features, but most of the enjoyment of the app is lost without the additional equipment.

What you do is you open or upload a song to SplashPlay and then play it. This will display the finger positions on your Android phone for you to view. If you have the additional equipment, you can transmit the information over to it and gain full benefit from this app.

The SplashPod is a little sheet that goes under the strings on your guitar and lights up in the same places that your Android phone screen displays a dot. This shows you exactly where to put your finger and makes learning a specific song fairly easy.

The concept behind SplashPlay is really cool, but the need to buy hardware to enjoy it makes it that much less appealing. Also, learning to play an instrument in this fashion doesn't really teach you music theory, so unless you just want to learn specific songs and struggle through the rest, it's best to avoid this app.

The software and hardware are distinct entities. You can use the Android app on its own, to learn chords, view videos, listen to songs or add/learn lyrics. If you want to extend the learning experience, you can purchase the hardware as an optional add-on, to simplify the learning process.

If you want to learn music theory, please recommend a video (in the forum) and we will update videos regularly. The whole point of SplashPlay is that users can add chords and lyrics to media and others can benefit from different peoples contributions. As more people add content, the tuition info becomes more comprehensive.

If you want to teach others music theory, you can video yourself describing scales, chord structures, etc and then use the application to add chords notes in sync to your video, so people can easily see your fingering patterns.

The application is meant to offer a portal for people to show you how play instruments by breaking down chord patterns so they are easily visible. The only other way to do this is with tablature books, that can be a pain to transcribe or expensive tutors. Being able to see the basic finger patterns on your phone will expedite the learning process and you can learn in your bedroom, on a bus or in a tent at a music festival !

This is first release software and our product pipeline is stuffed full of goodies, so watch this space (www.splashplay.mobi).

Thanks from the SplashPlay team.
