Progressive is one of the larger car insurance companies in the United States and definitely has a large presence in the media. Their latest endeavor, the Android app, attempts to provide quick access to answers and offers some handy tools for car owners. The app itself was actually pretty slow moving and felt very much like a web app instead of a native app. In fact, after a little digging, that's exactly what was going on.
The app was taking the pages from the mobile version of their site and putting them into tabs. This definitely was a big turn off as users aren't really getting the best experience possible. The app has 4 tabs, Insurance Shopping, Customer Service, Claims, and Shopping Tools. The Insurance Shopping tab is basically a directory of phone numbers to help you get insurance quotes. The Customer Service tab is for current customers to receive help with their issues.
The Claims section is perhaps the most unique allowing people who get in an accident to immediately report the claim from the phone. Lastly, there is the Shopping Tools tab which offers a bunch of useful tools for car buyers. Overall, the app is useful in certain situations but really seems to be redundant with so many other services offering the same features.
