If you've got money riding on the outcome of March Madness, Sporting News NCAA Basketball for your Android phone is a good way to keep tabs on the tournament.
The app is essentially a news app, providing you with up-to-date scores and relevant headlines.
When you launch the app for the first time, Sporting News NCAA Basketball will ask you if you'd like to customize the app to feature your favorite teams. When you pick a team, you can also set the option whether or not you'd like to receive breaking-news notifications about these teams. Be aware, though, if you decide to turn on this option, Sporting News NCAA Basketball requires that you install the app AirMail Control Panel.
The app's main screen has an "All News" tab, which lists a few of the most recent headlines. If you click this tab, you're directed to another page that lists all the news stories and videos that were posted through the application.
While I like that you can scroll through these stories, I think it would be even better if this app had a news feed similar to what you might see on Twitter, so users can have up-to-the minute information. The main menu also has tabs for "Scores," "Twitter," "Polls" and "Standings."
"Scores" gives you scores for yesterday and today, and all the numbers are updated by the minute. "Twitter" is a feed of all NCAA-relevant tweets, by players, schools, coaches and the bigwigs inside of the NCAA.
"Polls" contains a lot of helpful information about the teams. Select a team from the drop-down menu, and you can look up the team's schedule and roster, and check to see if there's any news. "Standings" shows how each team measures up in the tournament.
Sporting News NCAA Basketball seems to work without issue, and does a good job of giving fans all the NCAA information they could ask for. Because it does what it sets out to do, and it's free, it's certainly worth checking out.
