Straight-shooting NHL apps for Android

by Kristen Nicole

I was born in the Midwest, so I can appreciate the chilling excitement of a good hockey game. With the NHL season getting underway, you’re not going to want to miss a swing of the stick... or the fist. Get your blood pumping with any of these Android apps, whether you’re sitting rink-side, or across the state.

For the team

There aren’t many NHL teams with official Android apps, but the Chicago Blackhawks is one. With the free Android app, you’ll get team news, exclusive content, video recaps, photo galleries and schedule information. The team’s Twitter stream is also pulled through their app, so you won’t miss the entertainment on or off the ice.

NHL Hockey News (free) brings the latest in league news, including player updates, trades, and scores. Pulling from a number of resources, this aggregator makes it easy to stay updated in real-time. Set your favorite team for quick access on the home page, and bookmark stories for later. Customize sports channels to follow your teams, and share items with friends.

The NHL News Feed app is pretty basic, and lacking aesthetic appeal. But it is one of the few hockey apps on Android that offers a home screen widget. Read news without having to open the app, with scrolling options to flip to the next story, or open an article in the browser. NHL News Feed is a free app.

Games and aggregators

Yahoo! Fantasy Hockey is a popular web game, along with the rest of Yahoo!’s fantasy leagues. Recently launched in the Android Market, this free app brings mobile access to your roster. Check your league standings, manage your starting lineup, receive alerts and view your match-ups. You’ll also get player news, forums and fights galore.

Hockey Nations 2010 is a 3D game for fans. Choose a world team, and control players by swiping your touch screen. Work your way to the cup rounds, with colorful graphics for a birds-eye view of your game play. This Android game is $4.99, with a shoot-out version that’s free.

Scoreboard is Google’s sports portal, with hockey being one of several leagues you can follow.  Get scores, schedules, standings and news for baseball, basketball, football and golf. The free app also provides live, in-game notifications for the teams you set as favorites.

Mobile Sports News is an aggregator of multiple news sources, bringing you the headline feeds from ESPN, NBC and a number of sports blogs. You can get your hockey news on this app, along with many other sports. Add various feeds to your favorites, filter by blogs, scores and websites, and share articles with friends. This app is free.
