Enjoy a festive holiday party with these Android apps

by Kristen Nicole

It's cold outside, so heat things up with a holiday party. There's no better excuse for fun and festivities. From the planning process to show time, these Android apps can keep your party from being a pooper, and keep you from pooping out. Stay on task, update friends in real time, and don't forget the mistletoe.

Prep time

Facebook is one of the easiest ways to create, share, and manage your event. Invite friends, send them messages, and keep tabs on your guest list. Now that events have been incorporated into Facebook mobile apps, you can manage your event on the go. And if your friends have the free Android app, too, they'll see your event right from their home screen, receiving mobile alerts, as well.

Get your party off on the right foot, with the Heineken Party Planner. It comes with drink and recipe recommendations, and a party-planning feature. Free, this Android app has tabs for your invites, food, music and shopping list, with easy navigation. Save your party plans for your next shindig.

For a pre-set list manager, try the Party Planner app. It times things out weeks in advance, with suggestions for tasks and shopping items, which you can add to, as well. Lists are broken into categories with this 99-cent Android app, and you'll get an at-a-glance look at how many items you've left to complete.

Gilt for Android is a great resource for the fashionable party planner, with daily flash sales on designer dishware, decor and dresses. And this year, Gilt has specialty holiday guides for gift and party ideas. Free, this Android app will glam up your entire party.

If there's ever a time you need help with errands, it's during the holidays. Trippster can streamline the running around you'll do — picking up groceries, liquor and decorations — by routing your errand locations efficiently. At $2.99, this Android app is a trip planner with Google Maps and contacts integration, saved trips and more.

Party time

Once you're home with the groceries, it's time to get cooking. The Food Network's Android app — named In the Kitchen: Recipes, Chefs — has recipes and show clips on demand. Keep your phone on hand as you prepare your holiday feast. The $1.99 app also includes a kitchen timer and unit converter.

Keep your guests in the holiday spirit, with some tunes from Christmas Radio. This free app streams more than 40 Christmas radio stations, with the added perk of categories for traditional, rock, religious and jazz. Christmas Radio is aptly themed with holiday graphics and song info. Hook your phone up to some speakers, and pump things up.

Whether you're spiking the eggnog or keeping cozy with winter rum, 10001 Cocktails will make you a star bartender. This free Android app is easy to navigate and search, so you can find what you need. Save drinks to your library, and be ready with themed cocktails that will make your party a memorable one.

It wouldn't be a holiday party without a sprig of mistletoe. Get your guests a little more engaged with the Talking Mistletoe app. Free for Android, you get a photo of some mistletoe, with sound effects at every tap of the screen. You never know what you're going to get — it could be a smoochie sound, or a warning to avoid so many calorie-filled cookies.
