The winners of the Samsung Galaxy Note S Pen App Challenge have been announced! The competition invited software developers to create applications taking full advantage of the Galaxy Note’s S Pen capabilities.
In total, 48 submitted apps were eligible. They were evaluated on the overall user experience they offered on the Galaxy Note, the quality of their ideas, their functional implementation, and their S Pen integration.
The best overall app, and grand prize winner, is Monkey Write ★ Learn Chinese by Chiu-Ki C. This app makes learning Chinese characters fun. Because writing complicated characters on paper can be tedious, Monkey Write turns it into a game. What started as a simple idea at a hackathon, now has many workbooks filled with multiple characters to learn. Congratulations, Chiu-Ki!
The second-prize winner is Maze Racer by Roger P, a simple puzzle game that takes full advantage of the S Pen for improved accuracy. Third prize went to Drawing Pad by Christopher L which allows users to create their own art using photo-realistic crayons, markers, paint brushes, colored pencils, stickers, roller pens and more.
In addition, SignDoc Mobile by Mike D won the Popular Choice Award. This handy app allows for professional integration of handwritten signatures in electronic documents. Ten additional apps received ‘honorable mentions’.
Approximately $205,000 of cash and prizes were offered in the S Pen Challenge, $100,000 of which went to the grand prize winner. The jury of judges included Phil Nickinson, Editor of AndroidCentral.com; Andy Wilson, VP of Consumer Marketing at AT&T; Jeff Tannenbaum, Investment Principal at Blue Run Ventures; Baudouin Corman, VP Publishing Americas at Gameloft; and Kevin Packingham, SVP Product Innovation at Samsung Telecommunication America.
