Android apps to prepare you for The Oscars’ red carpet

by Kate Currin

Award shows can be great television. The beautiful gowns and exquisite jewels make for a fashionable red carpet entrance, and hours of pre-event TV programming to rate your favorite stars' fashion sense (or the fashion sense of their celebrity stylist/sponsor). The surprised speeches and camera pans to the "oh-no-I-didn’t-win" faces of losers make for uncanny moments of humor for us pajama-clad viewers across America. This year, whether you are watching alone or with a group of star-loving friends, check out these Android apps to up the ante on your Oscar night viewing fun.

Live From the Red Carpet

Step out of your limo, err... I mean open this Android app, and Ryan Seacrest and Giuliani Rancic great you on the red carpet. The free Live From the Red Carpet app from E! Entertainment puts you up close and personal with the award nominees as they strut their stuff on the red carpet before Hollywood’s golden ceremony. Use the app now to view coverage from the precursor award shows and video, photos and stories about the upcoming 2011 Oscars. I love the “GlamCam 360” that gives you a full view of some of the best-dressed Oscar nominees. With this app on your Android, you won’t miss any fashionable moments from this year’s award shows.

BlackSwan Live Wallpaper

Unfortunately, The Oscars does not have a “Best Kiss” award like some of the other award shows (here’s looking at you, MTV). If they did, my money would be on Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis taking home the golden statue. At least I hope to see mom-to-be Natalie take home the best actress award this year at The Oscars. Until the Black Swan movie DVD is released, you can relive that dramatic kissing scene with the BlackSwan Live Wallpaper app ($1.00).

Oscar Quotes

This clever little free app, Oscar Quotes, lets you scroll through some of the best 45-second Oscar acceptance speeches from award shoes past. Open up the app, pop the cork and browse great and silly speeches from Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck, Bob Dylan and more! Recite them out loud to your friends for additional Oscar fun.

The Oscars Trivia Challenge

If you are having an Academy Award viewing party with friends or family, you should definitely download The Oscars Trivia Challenge app ($2.99). Test your guest’s knowledge of more than 80 years worth of best picture nominees and more. The trivia challenge is divided up into a category menu so you can choose from best actor, best actress, best picture categories and many more. The quicker you answer the multiple choice questions, the more points you earn.

Have you been slacking on the movie going this past year? Never fear, check out the free Oscar 2011 app for a countdown to the red carpet and links to information on all the best picture nominees. This is a really simple app to get you up-to-date quickly before your Oscar party. Don’t look like a fool in front of your friends; download the free Oscar 2011 app!
