In the winter, I walk more than run in frigid Chicago. Who am I kidding: I mostly walk in the city all the time. The free RunKeeper Pro app for Android is my best friend in the winter, tracking my walks to and from work, letting me know that I walked off the calories in my skinny caramel macchiato before I even take a sip of my beloved coffee concoction. In the summer, it will be my sworn enemy, reminding me how much I haven't run on the beautiful lakefront.
I use the GPS system to track different paths through the city to see which one gets me to work more quickly. If you choose, you can share your walking and/or running paths with others online. I turn this function to private because I don't need any would-be stalkers knowing my path to work every day. But, this could come in handy if you're a trail runner who likes to head into the woods on your own. In case something happens, your loved ones and Internet buddies will be able to track you down. You can share your beloved running paths with other runners, as well, with the app. What would be cool is if the app told you if any of your running buddies were running near you.
The app tracks your overall weekly mileage and pace, so you can one-up yourself with more miles earned the following week, or work on improving your pace. You can also keep track for activities like cycling, hiking, downhill skiing, snowboarding, elliptical and more. Other features of the running-themed app include audio cues, customized interval workouts, manual entry for treadmill and other cardio equipment, integrated RunKeeper FitnessClasses and no advertising.
Overall, this fitness app works well for wellness walkers, professional runners and general sports enthusiasts to keep track of workouts for improvement week after week.
