Sony’s Xperia PLAY is an Android device that was designed just for gamers. Despite somewhat sluggish sales, a few months after its release we’ve seen a slew of games optimized for the device, some titles even targeting the hardcore gaming community with their exclusivity. We’ve picked some of our favorite titles here.
Minecraft Pocket Edition ($6.54)
Minecraft took the long road to mobile, but when it finally landed in the Android Market, it was well worth the wait. Minecraft Pocket Edition delivers a world of creation where you erect structures using the materials in your environment. There’s 36 different kinds of blocks to play with, leaving only your imagination to limit your designs. Optimized for Xperia PLAY at the same time of launch, Minecraft is social, too, with multiplayer worlds for collaborative construction.
The Sims 3 ($6.99)
The Sims 3 was one of the first games I added to my Android phone, and it’s vastly different from the PC version. While all mobile editions of this virtual world are limited compared to the full PC version, the Xperia PLAY one has a few extra buttons that make navigating people and objects a little easier. The Sims 3 was one of the first games offered on the Xperia PLAY, maintaining a widespread presence for EA across devices and platforms. If you’re someone who easily gets stuck in story-mode games, it’s fun to control The Sims 3 on a handheld optimized for mobile gameplay.
Let's Golf! 2 ($4.99 from Gameloft)
One of the more popular golf games around, Let's Golf 2 from Gameloft is another Xperia PLAY optimized title. It’s even got the look and feel of Everybody’s Golf, the popular PlayStation cartoon sports game. Another game that’s easier for some without the touchscreen manipulation, hit the X button to swing, add a spin and switch clubs with the other buttons. The game itself is packed with obstacles as you make your way through the golf course, encountering hazards and collectibles. There’s also multiplayer support for both local and online play, making a round of golf that much more challenging.
Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles ($4.99 from Gameloft)
Another early title on Xperia PLAY, Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles brings a popular game to the game-centric device. Nearly two years after first arriving on the iPhone, Assassin’s Creed for Xperia PLAY has strong gameplay as you set out on a journey collecting orbs and fighting evil. Controls are well mapped to the Xperia PLAY’s D-pad and buttons, with square and triangle for combat and X for leaps. Throw in the L and O buttons for blocks and contextual actions, and you’ve got a comfortable arcade experience at hand.
Guerrilla Bob for Xperia PLAY ($1.49)
Smash hit Guerrilla Bob has made a name for itself by becoming a readily available title across the board. With the release of an Xperia PLAY optimized version, the hit game takes full advantage of the D-pad buttons for complex battle moves and fast-paced shooting schemes. Each level has its own assortment of enemies with a boss fight at the end. As you power through each level you can upgrade your weapons. There’s multiplayer support for Wi-Fi play, and its basic shoot-em-up motif is plenty fun for time wasters.
Cordy is a great game no matter where you play, challenging your speed and coordination rather than your aim. Speeding through a never-ending obstacle course, Cordy speeds through his fantasy world as he runs through 27 levels to restore power for his planet. You earn stars for each level by collecting gears, beating the level within a certain time limit and for simply passing. Things get challenging when you have to land a jump and grapple something mid-air, which is when your Circle button comes in handy. It makes jumps easier than a touchscreen, as you can hold it down continuously while doing your other moves.
