Pixel Rain is a new physics based puzzle game from Silicon Studio. It combines modern physics and touch game play with a very retro aesthetic to create a unique experience for android devices.
Most of the objects in the game are styled to look like Retro LCD games. It’s very reminiscent of the Game & Watch games of the past, and the sound effects constantly made me think of playing as Game & Watch in Super Smash Bros. It’s a very cool aesthetic, but I kind of wish there was some music to keep things more interesting.
The goal of each level in the game is to protect the valuables from the spiky pixel things that rain from the top of the screen. You do this by using the various pieces provided to you to shield them. As the layouts of the maps change and more mechanics are added, the game constantly gets a little bit more challenging. Eventually you have to deal with swinging platforms and unstable structures. Figuring out the solution to a level feels extremely satisfying, mostly due to some of them feeling impossible. Many levels feel like they can be solved in multiple ways, which is always a plus. There is a lot of trial and error in this game, and sometimes you might just need some dumb luck.
The game can feel very lifeless at times without any background music. Although, there is a pretty sweet tune that plays at the main menu. This game is definitely meant for patient people or general puzzle solving fans. It’s a solid title that will frequently make you scratch your head, and it’s completely free too. Check it out, but try not to hurt your thinker box.
