Don't let the name of the game scare you away. Math Maniac for Android is a fast-paced puzzler that's more fun than you might expect.
The concept is quite simple. You have 10 seconds to combine numbers to equal the number in the left bottom corner of the screen.
You do this by selecting from a screen of different-colored boxes, a different number in each one. Points increase when you combine more numbers, and using the same color doubles your points. Clicking a box again will de-select a number.
Math Maniac has three different levels of difficulty: Easy, Hard and Free Play (there's no timer counting down during Free Play). I like that there are different difficulty levels because it offers variety, challenges users to advance, and even offers up some replay value.
The Easy setting is actually quite difficult, unfortunately, so it will be difficult for kids to use this game as a study tool. It might be nice to see the developers add another level just for younger children.
The game's elevator jazz soundtrack also adds a fun element, with the game making a finger-snap sound effect each time you solve an equation.
Math was never my favorite subject in school, and I've never found addition to be an especially fun thing to do in my spare time, but this game provides the context where it's actually quite fun and addicting. Not only does Math Maniac flex your brain muscle, but it will keep you occupied for a while.
