Android game Pinball Deluxe offers fun and realistic tables

by Caitlin M. Foyt

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a pinball machine in the basement. And not every pinball wizard has the means or the time to waltz on over to the arcade whenever she feels like it. That's why, if you're craving a good old-fashioned game of pinball, Pinball Deluxe for your Android phone is a great app to have in your library.

What's great about Pinball Deluxe, a pretty realistic pinball-machine simulator, is that it gives you options. There are three different "tables" to choose from: one that's carnival-themed, another takes place in space, and the last one is set under the sea. Each of these tables has a different layout, with different challenges. Just because you've mastered one table, the game isn't over.

Regardless of which table you pick, it feels like you're playing a game of pinball. The game's graphics aren't quite 3D, but they are vibrant and sharp. The board lights up and flashes, it makes a lot of pinball-machine-like noises, and when your ball runs into certain objects, the game responds by making your phone vibrate.

The game's physics also accurately resemble real life, so when you push a button, the game instantly responds.

What's nice about Pinball Deluxe is that your screen follows the ball across the table as you play. This way, you can still get a glimpse of what's happening up close.

My one complaint with Pinball Deluxe is the invasive banner ads throughout the game. They occupy a lot of space along the top and bottom of the screen, and I find them very distracting.

If you ask me, nothing beats a real pinball table, but if you need a substitute, Pinball Deluxe will do the trick.
