Virtual Table Tennis 3D for your Android device is a visually stunning table tennis simulator, but looks aren't everything. The game has some iffy controls, and seems to lack any kind of substance.
When you stop to think about it, unless you belong to a sports club or live in a college dormitory, ping-pong tables are kind of hard to come by. If you're a fan of the game, it's understandable why this might be an appealing download.
While Virtual Table Tennis 3D's crisp graphics look just like the ping-pong table of your dreams, sadly, that's where the appeal of this game ends.
There are three levels of difficulty: novice, intermediate and expert — and even the novice level was challenging. But, that's mostly because the controls are difficult to get a handle on.
If you need to make a dive to the other side of the table, the ball flings back so quickly, it's pretty much impossible to make contact. Not only that, but sometimes the game didn't want to let me move to where the ball was headed. I also noticed that even if the ball was coming directly toward me, it was easy to swing and miss. The physics of the game feels inconsistent.
Sometimes the game would throw me off entirely, and create a scenario where I was easily able to return serves without any issue. Unfortunately, this would make the game feel more like I was throwing a ball at a wall than playing against an opponent.
Kind of a bummer about this game is the fact that there's no tournament mode. There's this illusion that you're progressing through the game in some way, as you unlock the opponents you are able to play against, but the game never seems to change.
It's certainly a pretty game, but there's not a whole lot else to it. Because this might be the best table tennis game available in the Android marketplace, sadly, gamers will have to wait a while before something better comes along.
