Android App Video Review: Sky Force

by Erik Fikkert

Sky Force is a vertical shooter that has now made its way onto Android phones. Popular on other devices, the game is now looking to make a market for itself on this platform.

After starting the game, difficulty levels and ships are chosen and the player is thrown right into the action. In order to clear a level, a certain percentage of that level must be destroyed. If that percentage is not met, the player will be forced to try again. The ship auto-fires for the player so the game is all about movement. Dragging a finger across the screen will control the ship's direction and, in turn, decide whether you stay alive or become just another piece of metal on the field. Powerups and shield boosts can be picked up in the level to help with the player's near impossible task of destroying entire armies by themselves.

Overall, if you're a big fan of vertical shooters, Sky Force is a no-brainer. It plays well and has the chiptune soundtrack to prove it. Priced at a medium range in the Android Market, it may be worth checking out the free version first to see if it's a fit. It's a well made game that will keep you entertained for quite a while. I'd love to see some videos of people beating it on the hard difficulty.
