Fantasy Defense is a solid new tower defense title from Playbean. It uses a colorful and vibrant art style, awesome music, and Anime-style drawings to really suck you in. The mechanics are very well balanced, with a nice variety of units, and there is a comprehensive, almost RPG-like upgrading system, especially where the special Hero units are concerned. This is definitely an excellent choice for any tower defense fanatic.
Much like the popular Crystal Defenders from Square Enix, the towers in this game are actually people. These include melee-focused warriors, ranged archers and mages, some specialized versions of each, and the ultra-powerful Hero units. Each unit can be upgraded to a large degree, both temporarily within a level, and permanently using the Hero Point upgrading system. The circuit-based, closed path level layouts are all rather unique and well designed, requiring you to frequently rethink your strategies.
Depending on how well you do, you’ll also be able to unlock other modes for each level, including endless ‘Infinity’ mode, and the Gate Breaker mode. These make for a great way to earn some extra coins and hero points, though if you are so inclined, you can just buy them in-app for an extra boost. The difficulty curve of the game has been very well balanced for most of the time I played it, although it seems like it could easily devolve into ridiculously difficult levels to tempt you with IAP. That’s just conjecture on my part, though.
All in all, this is a very solid tower defense. The colorful visuals will draw you in, and the excellent RPG styled upgrading and customization will keep you in. It’s not a perfect game, but it does just enough new and unique stuff to make it worth a download. Considering it’s free, there’s no harm in it anyway. I definitely recommend Fantasy Defense.
