Thanks in part to the second wave of the Humble Bundle, popular auto runner Canabalt has finally made a pit stop on Android. Originally a Flash game, Canabalt became a mobile household name once released on iOS few years ago. Despite fans’ cries for an Android port, Canabalt remained stubbornly parked on Apple devices only. Now, with developer Kittehface Software at the helm, the Android version sports updated graphics and is appropriately dubbed as Canabalt HD.
In the absence of Canabalt, a few games have stepped in to fill the missing genre. Run Like Hell! and I Must Run!, er, ran with the same concept along with added movements such as slides, melees, and double jumps. Don't take Canabalt HD simplistic one-tap action as lacking though, it’s still a bit of a challenge. Running head first and tapping at every gap is sure way to fall to your early grave, timing is crucial. Here's a tip: using boxes to slow your run can help avoid over-jumping smaller buildings.
Along with the updated 8-bit inspired graphics, the same pulse pounding music by Danny Baranowsky returns. I cannot stress enough how it complements the game. The tune perfectly depicts your character’s desperation as his surrounding becomes progressively chaotic. Without the adrenaline and well timed score, well, Canabalt wouldn’t be Canabalt.
Priced at $2.99 with no additional features that differentiates it from the iOS version, it may be difficult to convince yourself to plunk down the cash. However, if you’re looking for the perfect endless runner, complete with an awesome soundtrack then give Canabalt HD... a run.
