Android App Video Review: C.H.A.O.S

by Andrew Koziara

C.H.A.O.S is a new helicopter-based combat Android game from Sky Jet International that's a cross between a simulation and action title. The controls can take a while to get used to and it’s not so easy to pick up and play, but after a bit of practice, this game really opens up and becomes a frag fest. With a vast upgrading system, several single player missions, and fun drop-in-and-play online multiplayer, this is definitely a title that you shouldn't skip.

Upon starting the app, you can choose to play the tutorial, or jump straight into single player missions or multiplayer. The controls are rather complex for a mobile game, combining tilt and touch controls to offer precise, yet sometimes unwieldy steering and aiming. Really though, after you play a few single player missions and get used to it, it quickly becomes second nature and you can focus on the action. The single player missions are quite varied, from dogfights to base defense matches with turrets all over the place to time trial maneuver tests. More than anything, the single player seems to serve as a kind of training for the multiplayer.

The multiplayer is fun and simple. After selecting multiplayer from the main menu, you’re just dropped into a match with no hassle. Whether you’re playing online or offline matches, the maps are littered with ammo pickups and power-ups to lend you a hand. In my experience, there were always around one hundred people online, so finding matches wasn’t ever an issue. Multiplayer also comes with a leaderboard and experience based rank system in which you build your way up from a lowly recruit. In both offline and online modes, you earn silver and gold coins. These allow you to go into the hangar and enjoy the extensive upgrading and customization options, letting you buy different helicopters, improve armor and max ammo, buy different skins, and much more. In-app purchase coins are also available should you want them.

The graphics are pretty basic. Realistic, low resolution textures make the environments rather plain, but they get the job done. They aren’t bad or anything. They’re just unremarkable. Where this app has real issues is in the technical stability. At least on my Motorola Xoom, the game froze on me constantly, and when it did, any progress I made was lost. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played those first few missions. If that happens to you, just exit the app the normal way after everything you do, just to be safe and ensure your progress is saved. If you don’t have such issues, then congratulations! You have access to a smooth running, difficult to learn, but fun to master helicopter combat game, which is available for one dollar at the time of this review. At that price, C.H.A.O.S is most definitely a steal.
