Zookeeper DX TouchEdition is a great new match-three game from Kiteretsu. It doesn't do all that much to innovate gameplay-wise, but it's a game with a crazy and unique style that will make you smile. Colorful and blocky pixel art is used to depict the very amusing concept, characters, and animals, and it's just loads of fun.
Basically, all the animals in the zoo have escaped and are running amok. You are the simple zookeeper sent in to round them up. I don't know how this concept translates into a match-three game, but I don't care. There are two modes of play to choose from. Normal mode has you matching animals against a timer. Eventually you'll level up, and the possible moves become harder and harder to spot. Luckily, you are able to cheat and have moves pointed out using the Binoculars power up, but you only get to use them a couple times. There are very useful wildcard tiles which eliminate all of a particular animal, which usually leads to an epic combo. If there are no available moves, the entire board will be shuffled to create some.
The other mode is called Tokoton. In this mode, you need to capture one hundred animals to continue to the next level, with no level limit to speak of. The differences between the modes are pretty subtle, and they don't feel very different at all. Either way, they're both loads of fun to play. Despite the vast amount of Bejeweled clones out there, this game still managed to be fun by using visuals and sound that really stand apart from every other game. The colors are so vibrant and the blocky pixel art is so endearing that you can't help but enjoy yourself. The whimsical nature of the music and sound design only reinforce this. The game is currently on sale for just one dollar, which it is definitely worth. Even if you're sick of match-three games, you'll probably enjoy this title. There's not much variety to be had here, and I really shouldn't like this game as much as I do… but I love and recommend it nonetheless.
