Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots delivers a chip off the old block

by Ian Black

Think back to the thrilling days of yesteryear. I’m talking wearing PJs and playing games with siblings on Saturday morning. Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots would be appropriate for many such memories. It sure is for me. This memory is now available for only 99 cents, and it’s certainly worth that to create memories for your own kids.

Most of the game stays true to the original, including the main star robots, Red Rocker and Blue Bomber. You’ll find the classic boxing ring and the controls — now touchscreen — to move around or to throw a left, right or block. This mobile app version adds a “training” element that the original game never had. In order to improve your plastic pugilist’s stats before a bout you can work on strength (by hitting a heavy bag), defense (avoiding and blocking the punches your opponent throws), style (on the speedbag) and stamina (by jumping a big chain jump rope). The most fun part remains the boxing matches themselves and, of course, knocking the block off your opponent.

Complaints? Only perhaps that the game stays almost too true to the original, and gets old after extended play. Still, for little kids, it’s sure to be entertaining. I hope that in future versions, you can play against real people online rather than just against your Android device. This game is most fun played by two.
