APPOLICIOUS ADVISOR RATING:

4 of 5 bars
  • PRICE: Free
  • TASTY: Freestyle gameplay lets you get creative.
  • BUMMER: In-app hard sell to purchase cars and levels.
  • COOL: Curved walls and a Nitro button add to the fun.

Who wouldn’t want to drive a monster truck at least once in a stadium show? You’d get to cruise above it all in the elevated cab, drop the hammer on an engine that sounds like a commercial airliner throttling-up for take off, and perform stunts you’d get arrested for in the real world. I don’t need to live vicariously through anyone else, with MEGASTUNT Mayhem I can do it through my Android device.

The free-styling nature of the game makes it fun. There isn’t a course or a puzzle you need to conquer, just an arena with a huge ramp in the center and a time limit. The crazier your stunts, the more points you get. Pretty simple.

Set the controls for on-screen touch or choose the tilt option (where your device’s accelerometer guides the steering), then press the gas pedal with your thumb and you’re off. Finger swipes drive the mega-stunts, which include back flips, 360-degree helicopter spins, wheelies and the crowd-pleasing front flip. A curved edge to the stadium floor lets you drive straight up the walls as you land from a stunt, which lets you slide more tricks in before your timer runs out. Also, a nitro button gives you a fire-out-the-tail-pipe extra burst of speed when you need it.

Watch out for the in-app purchase hard sell. The game itself is free, but if you want to choose from a fleet of custom cars or add levels, you must open your wallet.
