Get some classic retro gaming fun on your Android with Atari’s Greatest Hits

by Marty Gabel

It’s been out on iOS for a while, but now Android gamers can get their fix of nostalgia with Atari’s Greatest Hits.

The download is free, and with that, you’ll receive the Atari classic Missile Command to get you going. Older readers may recall this game from the arcades back in the day — it’s the one where you have fixed bases at the bottom of the screen and must fire lasers up to destroy the attacking spaceships.

Extra game packs are then available for $0.99 a pop. If you’re feeling truly adventurous (or you have a great deal of time on your hands) $9.99 will net you all 100 titles from Atari’s back catalog available within the app.

There are some truly classic titles here including Pong, Centipede, Asteroids, Battlezone, Super Breakout, Crystal Castles and many more.

Jim Wilson, CEO of Atari says “It exemplifies our company goals as we shift our core focus towards delivering casual gaming experiences through mobile and social platforms.” And who are we to disagree? These games play just as well today as they did many years ago (there’s a reason they’re ‘classic’ after all). Their simplicity and quickness makes them ideal games for mobile Android devices. Sure, not every title is going to grip you, but with 100 to choose from it’s hard not to find something to like, and they’re especially vibrant and fun to play on a big-screen Android tablet.
